I moved to station nearby when i was 16 n had many great nights at the pub for the next few years. Loved the social life there. Fantastic race meetings with a lot of history there. Have photos of cricket matches etc from those days. Was so sad to see town loose out when road moved.

Just another thought I am retired nowdays (in my mature years) living in the Adelaide Hills and reading the blog above mine I see you are calling for amongst other things artists, I am such a person and would love to contribute in any capacity that I can, I am now widowed and more or less do my own thing whenever, so this may be just the chance I need to boot me back to the old place and see it once more; my legacy is my Kokutha/Yankunytjatjara/Pitjantjatjara heritage and though not traditional my art reflects earth/people /places/life. maybe I could be of help in any capacity you need, I am available.

My ears pricked up when I heard on ABC radio this morning (20th June 20010) about Kingoonya, I lived there in the early 60's with my husband and two girls, hubby worked on the railways as second in charge from the station master, Kingoonya was a thriving mostly railway town back then we had a store, police station, of course the pub,a community hall where films were shown on a regular basis and other viable enterprises existed.
Fred Pitt was the local courier and his truck supplied stores for Ciros store and the mail run in Coober Pedy, my husband often went with him and it was not unusual for them to be delayed as the road was more often impassable than not, due mainly to rain wash aways.
I don't know if the races are still an event but back then it drew everyone from all around and from the stations into Kingoonya for the magor event. My husband trained and rode a horse from North Well station on one such event and due to being given an oversized cap the said cap fell over his eyes half way through the race and the horse and rider took off into the surronding bush!
I remember visiting a family that worked a gold mine south of the town and of adventures and trips to the caves and places around, mainly south of the town.
I have often wondered and dreamt about reminising back at Kingoonya and a couple of times nearly detoured from Glendamo and the Stuart highway when going north, but have always been unsure of the road, maybe soon I will get back there.

I was on the front verandah when you went past. Did the trip leader realize that fuel is 10 cents a litre cheaper in Kingoonya than Spuds and Glendambo. Sorry to have missed you. The Hotel was quite busy over Easter and we met a lot of travellers.

We had a great trip Randall, although the flies were intense.

As we passed through Kingoonya, the trip leader was trying to get us on to Goog's Track to camp, so we didn't stop.
I did toot the horn though when we saw a group on the pub verandah taking a break. That was around 2.00pm on Good Friday. We were second to last in a group of 6 vehicles.

The track is getting quite corrugated now, but the sand is still the same. One near new tyre was badly staked heading into Lois Rock on one of our vehicles, but overall there were no other problems.

We saw several other vehicles along the track, all heading north. Some had camper trailers.

Still looking forward to a beer in July when we pass through again.

cheers,

Geoff.

I commented earlier that we will be passing through in July, well that is still correct, but we will also be coming through earlier than that on another trip.
Our 4WD club have a trip to Goog's Track over the Easter weekend and we will be passing by Kingoonya on Good Friday.
Have some good weather available for us, and we will probably refuel there too.

See you soon,

Geoff.

We have been through Kingoonya a few times, and have had a beer at the pub.

We have done Goog's Track twice, once each way with the trailer and no problems.

My best memory was when we travelled through from Glendambo after a wet season to find vast areas of Sturt Desert Peas. That year the Red Shed (pub) was still operating at Tarcoola.
It is good to see this great part of our state being promoted on the web. Hopefully you will get many more comments and visitors to your town.

We will be passing through in July when we participate in a forum (4x4earth) trip. Gawler Ranges and Oodnadatta Track will be the trip. So hopefully we will all be able to refuel at Kingoonya.

regards,

Geoff.
